Who is Lindsey Blackhurst?
Vocal Coach | NYC
Where I am Now
I love running my voice studio both here in New York and online with awesome people all over the world and getting to perform as much as I can. I truly love getting to know singers who are genuinely curious about their voice and excited to dig in and explore what's possible.
I’m driven by helping people find their authentic sound, whether that's through classical technique or belting out show tunes (I love switching between arias and musical theatre regularly!). I love developing classes, workshops, and lessons for singers to integrate mindfulness into their singing practices, because I've learned that some of the biggest vocal breakthroughs happen when we get out of our own heads.
When I'm not teaching or performing, you might find me hiking, getting lost in a good book, or riding my bike around like I'm twelve again. I'm also attempting to grow herbs in my tiny NYC apartment (I’ll let you know!). My wife and I are thinking about getting a cut doggo! I’m happy to hear any suggestions you might have.
I’m also constantly thinking about travel and reminiscing about my life-changing 35-day, 680 mile walk across Spain on the Camino de Santiago. Ask me anything….but be sure to tell me how much time you have, ‘cause I could go on forever.
It definitely took me a long time to get where I am.
Here’s the Long Story
Or “how I got here”
Maybe it starts with some things we might have in common.
I was one of those obnoxious (well, I think they're cute) children who could never stop singing. I dreamed of being onstage, belting out all my favorite songs from the most heartfelt shows.
But usually, I was pulled apart by my equal love for singing and my terror of being WRONG and BAD at it and making UGLY sounds.
Nothing has caused me as much joy and simultaneously given me the emotional turmoil as singing.
The ANXIETY & SELF-DOUBT, ammiright?
Sweaty palms, racing heart, racing thoughts, no thoughts (what are the dang words???), not being able to breath, shaking knees, shaking voice, making it through and then immediately circling through a constant cycle of “I should have” or “I didn’t” or “that was BAD” “wait. WAS that bad?”. I couldn’t even always practice properly in a room alone for fear of being heard through the walls.
I was so lucky to be a person who was consistently encouraged. I got to study voice at The University of Colorado - Boulder and get my BFA in acting. I had excellent voice teachers.
Yet, I could count on one hand the number of representative auditions I’d given. Three. The number was a paltry THREE.
And that just felt…well, AWFUL.
And then one day, “IT” was there and suddenly it was like my voice had finally shown up and I started singing and feeling awesome about it. Maybe not perfect, definitely knowing there was still work to do, but …. wow …. my inside singing self matched my outside singing self.
And I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out why and how. I’m a bit of a nerd, you see, and I like to know how things work.
I was so interested in this transformation that I actually decided to study it and write a dissertation about it while getting my doctorate in education from Teachers College - Columbia University.
I wanted to know what would happen if I intentionally combined voice science with mindfulness strategies. Would other singers also grow in confidence and vocal development?
What did I discover?
Wow. wow. Wow. More than I could have imagined - singers came away feeling much more confident, they felt able to approach their practicing more effectively, they grew in their vocal technique, and they found much more JOY and PEACE in their singing.
What this means
The great news is that there are mindfulness tools accessible to everyone and you can start immediately.
I have spent most of my career as a singer and educator to figure out how to feel as awesome singing as I wanted to. And I want nothing more than to pass these ideas and strategies on.
Yeah, I absolutely had to work on my technique. And take a ton of courses, and learn and sing as much as possible. BUT without the mindfulness, I don’t think I would have been able to do all that work on my technique and performance.
I also spent 15 years teaching music, chorus and theater in classrooms, where I incorporated Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and mindfulness strategies - fostering self-awareness, self-management while helping students stay resilient and learn their best.
Investing in this work is the most liberating thing I have ever done for my singing and my life!
